Duvall, 25, of Windermere, his confidence renewed, heads a contingent of Central Florida competitors out to conquer the world.The group leaves this week to preserve the United States’ dominance in the World Water Skiing Championship in London, England. The tournament will be held Sept. 16-20.”Last weekend was a real confidence builder for me,” Duvall said Friday. ”It was definitely my best performance and I enjoyed the best payday in my career.

Where others may hear only the slap of waves hitting the ski ramp, he hears a fighting song with a martial beat. Songs of fight and flight.Duvall, who will be 32 in August, has been the greatest male water skier the world has known. That’s more fact than opinion, backed up by his world jumping records, titles and victories compiled for the past 14 years.Still, Duvall knows the songs will not be sung for him forever.

Duvall Jumps Last But Proves He’s Best

Sammy Duvall needed but one leap Sunday – his first of the 1989 pro tour – to win the men’s jump competition in the Budget Water Ski Classic at Lake Ivanhoe. The world record, however, is still 15 feet and at least a couple of months away.Duvall, 26, the last skier of the day, soared 190 feet to surpass Mike Kjellander’s 187 feet. Duvall could have stopped there and accepted first place and a bundle of congratulatory hand shakes, but chose instead to try to break his own world record of 205 feet.

You might get two or three jumps like that in a lifetime.”That is, if you’re lucky and if your name is Sammy Duvall.Duvall, 25, still gets goose pimples talking about the 200-foot jump that won him his record fourth consecutive overall title at the World Water Skiing Championship last September in England.

Water Ski Champion Gives New Boat To Boy Scouts

Sammy Duvall, president of Sammy Duvall’s MasterCraft Boats of Orlando, has donated a 1987 MasterCraft Pro Star ski boat valued at more than $20,000 to the Central Florida Council of the Boy Scouts of America.Duvall, the reigning three-time men’s world overall water ski champion and former Scout, made the presentation Jan. 24 to Jack Sears, district executive of the Council, during the grand opening of Duvall’s new boat dealership in Orlando. Sears said the boat will be used to qualify scouts for merit badges in water skiing.

Sammy Duvall was down to the wire last year. It was his final jump of a summerlong tour and he was toe to toe with England’s Mike Hazelwood, 1984 jump champion.Duvall took a deep breath, cut a deep swath in the water toward the jump and soared off the ramp at 70 mph, winning by one foot. It won him the jumping championship and a $6,000 bonus to add to his five-figure winnings.For Scott Clack of Winter Haven it was not that close. He swept all 10 of the tournament stops to capture the freestyle title.

The rivalry between Sammy Duvall and Carl Roberge, the Wunderkinds of water skiing, spans the globe but centers in Central Florida.Duvall lives on the west side of Orlando, near Windermere, and Roberge lives in east Orange County. Their proximity is no coincidence. Central Florida is the water-skiing capital of the world. Orange County has more than 1,100 lakes.Duvall and Roberge are considered the two best overall skiers in the world — combining slalom (skiing around buoys), tricks and jumping.

Floridians Dominate Ski Tourney Sammy Duvall, Brush Hit Masters Jackpot

Two Central Florida water skiers earned the largest paychecks of their careers by taking overall titles in the prestigious Masters Tournament Sunday. Sammy Duvall of Windermere and Deena Brush of Leesburg captured the men’s and women’s titles. The tournament was offering prize money — a $50,000 purse — for the first time in its 27-year history.For Brush, who earned $10,980, it easily could have been a much smaller payday. She was trailing defending champion Ana Maria Carrasco of Venezuela in the jump (the last event)

Introduced to water skiing at the age of four by his parents, Diane and Sam, on the waters near his hometown of Greenville, S.C.,Duvall entered his first tournament two years later in 1969, thus beginning his illustrious competitive career.

Duvall, who was ranked No. 1 in the world in either Men’s jumping or overall from 1979 to 1994, held the Open Men’s world jumping record six times.He first set the mark in 1988 with a 205-foot leap.His sixth and final world record came in 1993 and was 220 feet,an astounding 15 feet further than his original mark.

He won 13 coveted Masters(U.S.) titles, eight U.S. Open Championships and seven Moomba Masters titles. Duvall was crowned the season champion eight times on the U.S. Pro Water Ski Tour during a professional career that netted him more than 80 victories.

Duvall also made his mark on the international scene as a member of the U.S. Elite Water Ski Team from 1979 to 1987.It was as a member of the U.S. Team that he laid claim to his living-legend status by winning the Men’s world overall title four times.His first world overall title came in 1981 as a fresh-faced 19-year-old.He also won water skiing’s most prestigious title in 1983, 1985 and 1987.

After a disappointing 1987 season full of injuries and sub-par – at least by his standards – performances, many people in the international water-skiing community felt Duvall didn’t have what it would take to win again.With the United States facing tough competition and its streak of 20 consecutive World Championship victories in danger of ending, Duvall needed to come up with his best performance yet to not only secure the team title for the United States, but to become the first male to win four overall world titles officially put him in the history books, it was Duvall’s extraordinary performance at the 1987 World Water Ski Championship in Thorpe Park, England, that forever cemented his greatness. Duvall came from behind to win the overall title on a day that he would later recall as the greatest day of his career.

Entering the final jumping event of the tournament he trailed Australia’s Mick Neville and fellow U.S. Team member Carl Roberge after taking early falls in the slalom and tricks events.  Needing a 190-foot jump to secure the jumping title and a 197-foot jump to win the overall title, Duvall hit the water as the last skier of the tournament.  With his first jump of the round, Duvall soared 194 feet to give himself the jumping title.  Now he had two jumps to go at least 197 feet – three feet short of his personal best – to win the overall title.He only needed one.On his second attempt,he took an extremely late cut, but as he was in the air, he knew it had paid off for him.The only question was how far? As he rounded the turn island at the end of the course he saw his distance come on the scoreboard.In true Duvall form, he had won the overall title – and silenced the doubters – by matching his then personal best of 200 feet in what has since become recognized as one of the greatest individual performances in water-skiing history.

Duvall, who officially retired from skiing in 1998, has been devoting his time to the water ski and wakeboard industry.He first opened Sammy Duvall’s Water Sports Center out of the Contemporary Resort at Disney’s Magic Kingdom,and most recently opened CURL by Sammy Duvall located at Downtown Disney Pleasure Island.
